Midnight Deadline for 2021 Jamaica Gospel Star Competition

The 2021 Jamaica Gospel Star Competition will close to entries at midnight tonight, May 31. Persons who are still interested in entering the free competition may do so at the JCDC’s website at www.jcdc.gov.jm.

A rebrand of the iconic Gospel Song competition, which has touched the lives of countless gospel singers and song writers for over three decades, the Jamaica Gospel Star competition focuses on the vocal talents and performances of the contestants, and accepts both original and unoriginal song entries.

“This competition has been Jamaica’s premier Gospel Song competition for 34 years and it is one of, if not the most successful Gospel competitions in Jamaica. It opens doors for a lot of new artistes both local and internationally every year, and a lot of our entrants  have gone on to build a solid music career, including Kerron Ennis, Kevin Downswell, Lubert Levy and Glacia Robinson, to name a few,” said Andrew Clunis, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the JCDC.

Clunis further stated that the rebranded competition is also being hosted virtually, from entry to final show, which is the standard for all the JCDC competitions for the 2021 cycle.

“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic we are in a constant state of adjustment, and so we decided to take the opportunity to not only modify the entry process of the competition, making it a fully virtual experience, but to also rebrand the competition, to give all our vocally-talented aspiring Gospel artistes a shot of becoming Jamaica’s next Gospel Star,” Clunis said.

“The main modification to this year’s competition is that we are accepting unoriginal song entries, so contestants can cover their favourite Gospel song, if they feel that will give them a better chance of out-shining their competitors.  Entry submissions will be vetted by our panel of adjudicators, who will select the finalists. The winner will then be decided via a combination of public voting and professional adjudicators,” Clunis concluded.

The 2021 Jamaica Gospel Star competition is free for entry, and is open to all Jamaicans 16 years and older.

Potential entrants should note that they will be required to submit a four minute or less video of them performing their favorite original or unoriginal song. Additional Information regarding the entry process and competition guidelines may also be found on the JCDC’s website.

Since its inception in 1987 the Gospel Song Competition has since become an iconic presentation of indigenous gospel music in Jamaica and attracts over 200 artistes, producers and writers of original gospel music each year. This competition is also seen as another avenue for the unearthing and growth of aspiring Gospel artistes through training with the best within the industry.
