Award Winning Visual Artists to Launch Exhibition May 20

Kingston, Jamaica: The top three winners of the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition’s coveted 2017 Jury Prize will see their works exhibited at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Port Royal Street, Kingston, from May 21 to May 31. The exhibition, which will be launched on Sunday, May 20 beginning at 3:00 pm, will feature the works of outstanding artists Jermaine Morgan, Dwane Bailey and Michele Lee Lambert who received the first, second and third overall awards, respectively.

The competition’s coveted Jury Prize is given annually to the top three artists with the best overall work, who are selected by a Jury of adjudicators who are notable artists within the Jamaican Art Industry.

The exhibition, which runs from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily is free and open to the public.

According to Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the JCDC, Stephen Davidson, “We heartily congratulate the 2017 Jury Prize winners as what they have achieved is no easy feat. This exhibition promises to be an exceptional one and we encourage the public, not just art lovers, to come out and experience the best of what our emerging and professional talent have to offer.”

Davidson continued “The JCDC Jamaica Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition is a 55 year old platform and strong visual arts tradition, which has afforded the unearthing and development of Jamaican art and artists.  Part of the programme’s appeal is the unique showcase it provides in bringing together emerging, mid-career and professional artists.”

Organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition continues to unearth, develop and showcase the creative talents of Jamaicans from all walks of life, giving them a platform for expression and contribution to the development of the local art industry. Some of the noted and respected talents who have participated in the competition include Osmond Watson, Dr. David Boxer, Colin Garland, George Rodney, Christopher Gonzalez, Cecil Cooper, Alexander Cooper, Norma Rodney Harrack, Fitz Harack, Maria la Yacona, Howard Moo Young, Donnette Zacca, Errol Harvey, Owen Minott and Dr. Warren Robinson.
