Minister Grange announces celebrations for Jamaica 64

A full slate of events have been announced for the celebration of Jamaica’s 64th anniversary of Independence. The events move into high gear in late July and culminate on August 6 with the Grand Gala at the National Stadium.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange OJ, CD, MP has announced the calendar of national events and activities for Jamaica's 64th anniversary of independence under the theme "United in Celebrating Resilience."

High on the list of events is the Jamaica Festival Song Competition, which is commemorating its 60th anniversary this year. The popular annual competition is currently underway with an engaging cohort of finalists vying for the coveted top spot.

Minister Grange noted that the enduring significance of the competition is tied to its continued ability to unite Jamaicans through music, while showcasing the nation's creative excellence.

"The Jamaica Festival Song Competition is one of our nation's most treasured cultural activities. For 60 years, it has inspired patriotism, creativity and national pride, providing a platform for generations of Jamaican artistes to celebrate our identity through music," said Minister Grange.

She encouraged Jamaicans to support this year's finalists by watching the televised programmes and voting for their favourite songs ahead of the Results Show on July 25.

Minister Grange also shared the programme of activities for Jamaica 64 under the theme "United in Celebrating Resilience."

"This year's theme speaks directly to who we are as a people. It reflects the strength, determination and unity that have defined the Jamaican spirit throughout our history and, most recently, in the face of the challenges brought by Hurricane Melissa. Many of our communities experienced significant disruption, destruction and even loss, yet, as we have done repeatedly, Jamaicans faced adversity with courage and the unwavering belief that this too shall pass," the Minister said.

Minister Grange noted that this year's Independence celebrations represent more than commemorative events, describing them as an opportunity for Jamaicans to celebrate their shared resilience while looking confidently towards the future. The Minister announced that activities throughout July will include the weekly, televised talent search -  Jamaica Gospel Star Competition; the Jamaica Festival Song Competition Results Show; the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Service at Olson Memorial Church of God in St Andrew on July 26; and the Seville Emancipation Jubilee at the Seville Heritage Park in St Ann on July 31.

She also highlighted that the Independence Village, which will transform the National Stadium Complex into Jamaica's premier Independence hub from August 1 to 6.

The six-night celebration will feature the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation (August 1); the Jamaica Gospel Star Grand Finale (August 2); Mello-Go-Roun' (August 3); Independence Soul Tuesday hosted by Shukle Bus and produced by Romeich Entertainment (August 4); Bingo, Dominoes and Games Night (August 5); culminating with the Independence Grand Gala on August 6 in the National Stadium, with a watch party in the Independence Village.

While encouraging participation in the national events, Minister Grange also urged Jamaicans across the island to support the Independence activities taking place within their own parishes.

"These celebrations belong to all Jamaicans. We will be streaming the events live around the world, so whether you are here at home or representing our nation overseas, I invite you to be part of this special season. Come out with your families and friends, wear your black, green and gold proudly, support our outstanding performers, artisans and creatives, and celebrate the communities that continue to embody resilience, innovation and hope. Together, let us celebrate Jamaica 64—United in Celebrating Resilience, and confident in our future." she said.
