The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is now accepting entries for the Jamaica Gospel Song, Jamaica Children’s Gospel Song and the National Festival of the Performing Arts competitions.

These competitions staged by the JCDC with the kind support of sponsors have produced entertainers of high caliber who have contributed significantly to the cultural landscape of Jamaica. The Commission since 1963 has been unearthing, developing and showcasing the creative talents of Jamaicans from all walks of life.

The Jamaica Gospel Song competition seeks to inspire and foster spiritual development, while encouraging writers and vocalists to challenge themselves in thriving to become the best new artiste/writer of the year. It is a two pronged competition which encourages song writers and performers to express themselves utilizing any genre of music to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. The participants each year are exposed to a series of workshops addressed by professionals within the Gospel industry that help to provide them with the necessary grooming and training.

The National Children’s Gospel Song competition aims to bring about higher levels of interest and participation from children between the ages of 6 and 15 years; in expressing themselves by utilizing any genre of music to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. The competition accepts both covers and original entries.

The National Festival of the Performing Arts which includes Dance, Drama, Music, Speech and Traditional Folk Forms continues to be the stage on which many individuals and groups expose their creative talent and expressions and propel their careers. Schools, community groups, churches, youth clubs and social clubs are entitled to enter.

Prizes for the various competitions get better and better each year. The Jamaica Gospel Song 2012 winners received prize packages valued at over $2.5 million which included 2012 Nissan Versa and cash prize of $300,000.00 courtesy of Grace Tropical Rhythms along with other consolation prizes. The Children’s Gospel Song winners of the various categories in the Performing Arts also received cash and other prizes.

Deadline for entries for the Jamaica Gospel and Children’s Gospel Song competitions will close the last Friday in November 2012 and the National Festival of the Performing Arts the last Friday in January 2013. Entries are accepted from Jamaican citizens and persons who reside in Jamaica for a period not less than two years at the closing date for entries.

Entry forms for the 2013 competitions are now available at the JCDC Head Office located at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10, all JCDC parish offices island-wide and online at www.jcdc.gov.jm.
