The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s World Reggae Dance Championship is now a major calendar event. The primary aim of this competition which began in 2006 is to provide exposure to young adults who are skilled in the areas of reggae and dancehall dance expressions. The competition continues to be a success each year due to the vast audience support. It attracts dancers of the highest caliber, many of whom are recognized nationally in other dance competitions.  In 2009 the competition received its first entry from a Japanese Dance Group who placed second in the finals that year.  This group entered again in 2010 and 2011.

The World Reggae Dance Championship is open to groups of 3 to 6 persons, 16 years of age and over, residing in and outside of Jamaica.  Participants compete in the categories of Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Reggae Contemporary/Classic, Reggae Dancehall and Dance Narrative.

The Competition is anticipated to grow both in audience size and entries with the hope of attracting entries from other reggae dancers around the world.

The national finals will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012.
