National Heritage Week Celebrations – "Our Heritage... Our Legacy... Our Strength"

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport will celebrate National Heritage Week with several events across the island. National Heritage Week activities will run from Saturday, October 8 to Monday, October 17 and will be celebrated under the theme, "Our Heritage... Our Legacy... Our Strength".

National Heritage Week Thanksgiving Church Service

The celebrations will kick-start with the National Heritage Week Thanksgiving Church Service on Saturday, October 8 at the Andrews Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church, 29 Hope Road, Kingston 10, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Remarks will be given by His Excellency, the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, ON, GCMG, CD, K St. J, Governor General and the Honourable Olivia Grange, CD, MP, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport; while the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, MP, Prime Minister will do a scripture reading.

The guest speaker will be Rev. Christine Benguche of the Saxthorpe Methodist Church, while the 2016 Jamaica Gospel Song Competition winner, Marsha Jarrett will also give a musical tribute.

Parish Activities

The JCDC Parish Offices will also host Heritage Week Thanksgiving Church Services in each parish on Saturday, October 8 or Sunday, October 9. Other parish activities for the week will include Heritage Celebrations, Displays and Parades, Heritage Quiz Competitions, Heritage Tours, Floral tributes and National Heroes Day Salute and Awards Ceremonies to honour outstanding Jamaicans.

On National Heroes Day, Monday, October 17, the national celebrations will culminate with the annual Floral Tribute to the National Heroes at the National Heroes Circle and the National Honours and Awards Ceremony at King’s House, beginning at 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. respectively.
