FESTIVAL SONG 50th ANNIVERSARY GRAND FINAL SLATED FOR JULY 9

This Saturday, July 9, the top ten finalists in the Jamaica Festival Song Competition will vie to take home the title as the competition celebrates 50 years, making it the longest running song competition in Jamaica. Organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the grand final will be held at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, 36 Hope Road, Kingston 10 starting at 8:00 p.m.  

Special guest artistes include multiple-time Jamaica Festival Song Competition winner, Roy Rayon and the 2012 winnerAbbygaye Dallas. Ticket prices are $1,000 presold, $1,200 at the gate, and children $500. Tickets are available at Sangster’s Bookstore, Bill Express, JCDC parish Offices and at the JCDC website www.jcdcjamaica.com

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Jamaica Festival Song Competition, the finalists are competing to have their song be the golden jubilee anthem as we celebrate Emancipation and Independence 2016, which is being celebrated under the theme: “Let’s Get Together and Feel Alright”.

According to Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the JCDC, Stephen Davidson: “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Festival Song Competition, we couldn’t be more proud of this set of finalists; they truly embody what the competition is about.”

“We hope that the public are equally enamored with the finalists and will come out on Saturday to support their favourite performer, as we kick the festival season into high gear.” He continued.

Davidson further stated that in addition to competing for a chance to have their song be the signature song for the 2016 Emancipation and Independence Celebrations, finalists also have a chance to win over a million dollars in cash and prizes from sponsors CHASE Fund, Tourism Enhancement Fund, Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, Urban Development Corporation, Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, and JamCopy. The Competition is also supported by JAMMS, CVM TV, Bob Marley Foundation, Bob Marley Museum, Tuff Gong International, Mello FM, ZIP 103 FM, FYAH 105, KOOL 97, RJR 94 FM, Happy Ice and Lifespan Spring Water.

The Jamaica Festival Song Competition is one of the longest song competitions in Jamaica that continues to unearth and showcase several talented individuals each year. This competition which started in 1966 has been the driving force behind some of Jamaica’s acclaimed singers and song writers.
