JCDC HOSTS PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS FOR EASTERN PARTICIPANTS

(KINGSTON, JAMAICA) Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Eastern Region will be hosting two awards ceremonies to recognize the outstanding schools and groups in that region for 2016 JCDC Performing Arts Festival Season. These ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, May 3 for St. Catherine at the Cedar Grove Academy’s Auditorium and Thursday, May 5 for Kingston & St. Andrew at the Shortwood Teachers’ College’s Auditorium. The events, which form part of the Education Week (May 1 – May 7) in Jamaica, will commence at 4:00 p.m. on each day under the theme “Excellence Always Wins”.

Awards will be presented in St. Catherine and in Kinston & St. Andrew as follow: Top Performing Arts  Areas; Dance, Drama, Speech, Music and Traditional Folk Form, Top Institutions; Infant, Primary, All Age, Secondary, Tertiary and Community Group, Top Performing Arts School/Group in Zone, and the Overall Winner.

Close to 400 schools and groups from the region entered the 2016 Festival of the Performing Arts Competition with just over 4,000 entries.  Over 300 of these schools and groups received Merit, Bronze, Silver and Gold awards at the parish level, and represented the region well at the National Finals. There are some 40 awards to be presented over the two days.

Parish Custodes, Mayors, Ministry of Youth, Information and Education representatives, Principals, Teachers of the Performing Arts, Group Leaders, along with other invited guests, will also be treated in this Evening of Excellence, with some of the best and most entertaining entries from this year’s competition.
