FESTIVAL SONG KICK STARTS 50th YEAR WITH SEMI-FINAL CONCERT

This Thursday, March 3 will see the top 26 semi-finalists in the Jamaica Festival Song Competition go head to head at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre for a chance to become one of the competition’s 10 finalists, in the 50th staging of the competition. The semi-final concert organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), at 6:00 p.m. is free to the public. The semi-finalists from across the island will be pulling out all the stops to impress the judges.

As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Jamaica Festival Song Competition, those who have made it this far know that there is a lot more on the line than just making it into the top 10. Not only will they be performing for a chance to have their song be the signature song for the 2016 Emancipation and Independence Celebrations and the over a million dollars in cash and prizes that come along with this prestigious title; but they are also competing to have their song be the golden jubilee anthem of Jamaica’s longest running song competition.

Thursday’s concert round will select the top 10 songs that will rock the nation for the season. The songs that will be selected should primarily capture the spirit and the essence of the festivities associated with the Emancipation and Independence celebrations and be popular with the people.

According to JCDC Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Stephen Davidson: “This year’s semi-final concert should be a real crowd pleaser as all the semi-finalists are getting ready to put on their best show in honour of the competition’s 50th anniversary.”

“We encourage everyone to come out early so they can get the best seats to cheer on their favourite performer.” He continued.

In addition to performances by the top 26 semifinalists, the audience will also be treated to performances by Bescenta, a former Jamaica Festival Song finalist and Lee-Roy “Ancient Priest” Johnson, 2015 Festival Song winner.

The Jamaica Festival Song Competition is one of the longest song competitions in Jamaica that continues to unearth and showcase several talented individuals each year. This competition which started in 1966 has been the driving force behind some of Jamaica’s acclaimed singers and song writers.
