Parish Champions to be named in JCDC Performing Arts Competition

Parish Champions will be crowned as the Parish Finals of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) National Festival of the Performing Arts Competition begins on Monday, February 15. Finalists will compete in the areas of Dance, Drama, Music, Speech, and Traditional Folk Forms.

The JCDC, an Agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture, in unearthing, developing, showcasing, preserving and promoting the creative talents and expressions of the Jamaican people have given participants the opportunity to showcase their talents while competing for top parish honours and a spot in the National Finals.

The time, date, and location of the parish finals for the week February 15 - 19 are as follows:

Eastern Region: Monday, February 15, will see Kingston/ St. Andrew’s Music final at the Shortwood Teachers’ College Auditorium;Tuesday, February 16 will see St. Catherine’s Speech final at the Cedar Grove Academy Auditorium, Portmore.  Wednesday, February 17 will see Kingston and St Andrew’s Music final at the Shortwood Teachers’ College Auditorium and St. Catherine’s Speech final at the Cedar Grove Academy Auditorium, Portmore. Thursday, February 18, will see St. Thomas’ Music final at the Anglican Church Hall, Morant Bay; Kingston and St. Andrew’s Music final at the Shortwood Teachers’ College Auditorium and St. Catherine’s Speech final at the Cedar Grove Academy Auditorium, Portmore. Friday, February 19 will see St. Catherine’s Speech final at Cedar Grove Academy Auditorium, Portmore and Kingston and St. Andrew’s Traditional Folk Forms final at The University of Technology (UTECH) Auditorium.

Western Region: Thursday, February 18 will see St. James’ Speech final at St. John’s Methodist Action Centre, Montego Bay; while Friday, February 19 will see Trelawny’s Speech final at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Hall, Falmouth.

Central Region: Tuesday, February 16 will see Manchester’s Speech and Drama finals at the Manchester Parish Library Cultural Centre (Cecil Charlton Hall) and St. Elizabeth’s Traditional Folk Forms final at the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Hall, Santa Cruz. Wednesday, February 17 will see St. Elizabeth’s Speech final at the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Hall, Santa Cruz and Manchester’s Traditional Folk Forms final at the St. Mark Mandeville Parish Church Hall. Thursday, February 18 will see Clarendon’s Traditional Folk Forms final at St. Gabriel’s Anglican Church Hall, May Pen.

The competitions in the Performing Arts are opened to schools, community groups, youth clubs, social clubs, performing arts clubs, companies, and churches in addition to outstanding individual performers.
