“Jamaican Heritage Impacting the World” – The JCDC Celebrates National Heritage Week

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Youth & Culture will celebrate this year’s National Heritage Week with several events across the island. National Heritage Week will run from October 11 to 19, 2015 and will be celebrated under the theme, "Jamaican Heritage Impacting the World".

National Thanksgiving Service

The celebrations will kickstart with a National Thanksgiving Church Service on Sunday, October 11 at the New Testament Assembly in Hope Bay, Portland, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Hon. Lisa Hanna, MP, Minister of Youth and Culture will give remarks and also make a presentation of World Heritage posters and brochures to students of schools in Hope Bay. This is an extension of the wider public education effort to sensitize Jamaicans about the significance of the World Heritage inscription of the Blue and John Crow Mountains.

The guest speaker will be the Reverend Courtney Gordon, representing the Church of God in Jamaica, while the 2015 Jamaica Children’s Gospel Song Competition 11-15 year old Solo Winner, Erica Lumsden and the 2015 Jamaica Gospel  Song Competition Winner, Diamara Neil-Walker will provide musical tributes.

Parish Activities

The JCDC Parish Offices in collaboration with the Parish Councils will also stage Thanksgiving Church Services in each parish.

The week will also feature activities in each parish to celebrate our heritage including Heritage Celebrations, Displays and Parades, Heritage Quiz Competitions, Heritage Tours and Civic and Awards Ceremonies to honour outstanding Jamaicans.

On National Heroes Day, Monday, October 19, the celebrations will culminate with the annual Floral Tribute to the National Heroes at the National Heroes Circle and the National Honours and Awards Ceremony at King’s House, both at 7:30 a.m.
