PORT MARIA HOST VISUAL ARTS F.E.A.S.T

Visual Arts comes alive in St. Mary, as the JCDC launches the Travelling Showcase of the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the St. Mary’s Anglican Church Hall, Port Maria. The launch, dubbed F.E.A.S.T., which means “Flavourful Entertainment and Art Sweetened to Taste” will blend the visual, culinary and entertainment arts into a feast for the senses.

This Travelling Showcase organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) an agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture will feature the highest awarded visual arts pieces from the 2015 Competition. These items include Painting, Drawing, Works on Paper, Sculpture/Assemblage, Video Art, Photography, Fibre Arts and Ceramics from amateur and professional Jamaican artists from ages 6 years and upwards.

Launch Days Activities

There will be several interactive and engaging events throughout the day that will be divided into two segments – a school segment and an official opening segment.  There will be live art making which will be the main feature of the day with guest artists, on-site school competitions, live entertainment from local parish talents, public art activities, public murals, and giveaways. The public can contribute to the “Mek It An’ Share It” Initiative, which encourages the donation of hand-made toys and gifts for state Childcare facilities. There will also be live performances throughout the day with the official launch at 7:00 p.m.

The St. Mary-based artist, Mabusha Dennis former medalist in the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition will be Artist-in-Residence for the duration of the exhibition.  Members of the public can watch the development and progress of a painting of Port Maria He will be on location from Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 

 Following the launch, the exhibition will be opened to the public from Wednesday, May 13 14 to Friday, May 22, 2015. Opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays.  All are welcomed to view the pieces and admission is free
