JCDC TO HOST MEGA ART EXHIBITION AT JAMAICA CONFERENCE CENTRE

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Youth & Culture will officially launch the 2015 JCDC Jamaica Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition on Sunday, March 15 at the Jamaica Conference Centre.  The exhibition will remain until Sunday, March 29, 2015.  There will be several interactive and engaging events throughout that time that the public can participate in on the “Main Audience Days.”

Public Participation

Members of the public are invited to participate in three main ways: VIEWER’S CHOICE: casting their votes for their favourite piece of work on display; contribute to the “Mek It An’ Share It” Initiative, which encourages the donation of hand-made toys and gifts for state Childcare facilities as well as a live portrait painting demonstration by Mr. Mortimer McPherson, Master Artist & Art Teacher.

Launch Day Activities

On Launch Day, there will be Art Bruch between 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. for $2,500 per person which is catered by Jacqui Tyson’s From Thought to Finish, the exhibition will open at 12 noon and includes an Art Panel Discussion starting at 2:30 p.m. under the theme “A Wah Dat? Bridging the gap between Artist & Audience”. The panelists include Ms. Carol Campbell, Artist, lecturer at the Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts, Dr. Deborah Anzinger, Artist & Executive Director, New Local Space, Mr. Omari Ra, Artist & Head of the Fine Arts Department, Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts and Mr. Garfield Morgan, Artist & Member of the 2015 Adult jury panel for the Jamaica Visual Arts Competition. The moderator will be Ms. Nichole Smythe-Johnson, Independent Curator, Freelance Writer & Editor. There will also be live performances throughout the day with the official opening ceremony commencing at 4:30 p.m.

Main Audience Days Experience (M.A.D.E.)

There will be two other Main Audience Days – Wednesday,March 18: Schools’ Art Day Out and Sunday,March 29 the exhibition will close with the Awards Ceremony. These days will feature lively and fun art inspired activities, attractions and entertainment that create participatory and multi-sensory experiences.

3-in-1-Showcase

There will also be three exhibitions that will be featured during the period: the Jamaica Visual Arts Exhibition that will feature the 2015 Awardees; the Solo Exhibition from Kester Bailey, winner of the 2013 Studio Art Prize and the inaugural show for the JCDC/Jamaica Conference Center/UDC Joint Gallery Programme featuring the works of Garfield Morgan, Ewan Peart & Mortimer McPherson. The public will be able to view award-winning pieces daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., free of cost.
