Stellar Line Up for ‘An Evening with Miss Lou’

On Sunday, September 7, some of Jamaica’s finest in the cultural and creative industry including Fae Ellington, Amina Blackwood-Meeks, Deon Silvera, Karen Harriott-Wilson, and Sheldon Shepherd will pay tribute to the late Dr. the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverly, OM, OJ, MBE to commemorate the 95th anniversary of her birth.

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), the premier cultural agency of the Ministry of Youth & Culture will host this concert dubbed “An Evening With Miss Lou” at the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, 36 Hope Road in Kingston beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The concert will feature reflections and recital of Miss Lou’s work in a recreated atmosphere representing Miss Lou’s veranda from which she would tell stories and poems. The Scotia Singers, Jamaica Customs Association Choir, Mona Prep School, Katrina Grant-D’Aguilar and Emerson Barrett will also pay tribute to the late cultural icon.

The concert, which is free and open to the public promises to be a wonderful experience. This will also showcase exhibitions beginning at 4:00 p.m., Booths with traditional pastries, cultural artifacts, a best dressed male and female Bandana competition, prizes and giveaways which will provide a memorable experience for the entire family.

Miss Lou was instrumental in the Jamaican Dialect being given literacy recognition through the writing and performance of her poems in Patois. She has received national and international recognition.
