Performing Arts Competition Creating Opportunities for Young People

For years the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture, has been staging the annual Festival of the Performing Arts Competition which has been an excellent avenue for developing and showcasing the creative talents of Jamaican youths who yearn for an opportunity to have their talents exposed.

Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the JCDC, Stephen Davidson notes that the cultural opportunity existing in the Performing Arts Programme has benefitted numerous Jamaicans through training, publicity and recognition and “the benefits derived enable participants to make worthwhile contributions to the creative and cultural industries and in building Brand Jamaica.”

“The participants in the Performing Arts Programme have been motivated to use the training and exposure to pursue education and further training in the creative and cultural fields. While the prizes include cash incentives, trophies and gift packages, many of these participants are called upon to perform at various public and private functions, including national celebratory events. They are also featured at Jamaica’s premier family entertainment event, Mello Go Roun’” Mr. Davidson added.
