JCDC Rolls Out the ‘The Big Stage’ for Local Talents

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, an agency of the Ministry of Youth and Culture is introducing ‘The Big Stage’ competition to identify, promote and train talents in the areas of: Dance, Singing, Dee Jay, Stand-up Comedy, Novelty Acts, Magic/Conjuring, Signing and Miming. The competition is now opened to Jamaicans of all ages both male and female.

Evolving from the competitions, Popular Cultural Expressions/Pop and Variety Contest and Star Search which the Commission last produced in 2003 had received a little fewer than 2000 entries. The competition is reintroduced to the JCDC’s 2014 calendar of activities. According to JCDC Programme Coordinator for the Big Stage, David Reid, the JCDC is excited about The Big Stage which “will provide a meaningful opportunity particularly to unattached youths in rural and inner-city communities to hone their talents and be exposed on the national stage.”

The competition will be staged in five phases which includes: Community Talent Search which will work with the JCDC Parish Offices, community groups and the Social Development Commission to conduct these searches. There will also be Technical Workshops to train participants in areas such as stage craft, microphone techniques, presentation, choreography and auditions to select persons for the Parish Finals. The Parish Stage Show/ Parish Finals is to showcase and select the top two acts from the competitions to advance to the National Show and the National Finals which will be held as one of the Independence Celebrations activities.

The JCDC is gearing up for the Big Stage and will conduct island wide community talent search from June 1 to 30. There will also be technical workshops from July 1 to 4, Parish Finals during the period July 4 to July 13 and the National Finals on July 20.
