JCDC Creative Writing Competition Closes Wednesday, April 30

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Youth & Culture is making its final call to professional and amateur writers to submit their works for its 2014 Jamaica Creative Writing Competition. Entries for the competition will close on Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

JCDC Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Stephen Davidson says the entries received so far are encouraging but notes that with a week left before the deadline, persons still have time to submit their work.

The competition which encourages writers to enhance their skills in Standard English or Jamaican Dialect through Poems, Essays, Short Stories, Plays and Novels welcomes entries in three classes: Junior (U-12), Intermediate (U-17) and Adult (18 and older). Entrants are also reminded that their creative works and content should reflect Jamaican situations and experiences.

Entry forms are available on the JCDC website: www.jcdc.gov.jm, at its Head Office located at 3-5 Phoenix Avenue, Kingston 10 and all JCDC parish offices island-wide. Entries must be sent via email to library@jcdcj.gov.jm then three hard copies along with the completed entry form are to be submitted to any JCDC Office.

Winners are awarded cash, certificates of merit, medals, trophies and other prizes as an incentive for showcasing their talents. The award-winning pieces are also taken on an islandwide exhibition tour for members of the public to enjoy and to be inspired.

The competition boasts notable past awardees such as Professor Mervyn Morris, Trevor Rhone, Dionne Jackson-Miller, Basil Dawkins, Mervyn Nadine Tomlinson, Rhonda Harrison, A-Dziko Simba, Charmaine Morris, Carroll Edwards, Michael Reckord and Claudette Beckford-Brady.
