Basil Dawkins Encourages Students to get involved in Theatre

Renowned Jamaican playwright Basil Dawkins on World Theatre Day celebrated globally on Thursday, March 27, encouraged scores of students and other participants to become involved in theatre and arts which he said will help them to become well rounded individuals.

Speaking at an interactive session put on by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) dubbed, JCDC Live at the Olson Hall on the grounds of the Ardenne High School in Kingston, Mr. Dawkins said: “I was inspired to enter theatre by my mom in order to assist with my growth and development. There is room for successful theatre practitioners in Jamaica, however, you have to be at the top of your game.”

In offering his advice to the aspiring actors and playwrights, Mr. Dawkins told the eager participants that in order to improve their playwriting skills, they have to write frequently in addition to reading scripts and watching plays of other playwrights. He advised the participants to always do their best and not to listen to any negatives that may deter them. Mr. Dawkins also encouraged the participants to get involved in creative writing which will help them in other areas of their lives.

Mr. Dawkins lauded the JCDC for celebrating World Theatre Day through the interactive session which the participants thoroughly enjoyed. The playwright welcomed numerous questions on his life, inspiration, work and experiences and gave solid advice to the participants on how to develop their talents and interests.

World Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community.
