JCDC hosts ‘Tenky Miss Lou’ Concert and Dialogue Series to celebrate Cultural Icon

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will host a series of activities on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, 36 Hope Road, Kingston to celebrate the 94th birthday anniversary of the late Hon. Louise Bennett–Coverley, OM, OJ, MBE. These activities include an Exhibition and Multimedia Presentation on her work and life opening at 2:00 p.m. followed by a Concert at 4:00 p.m. featuring her songs and poems as performed by school, community and youth groups.

The day’s activities will close with a Cultural Dialogue that will examine the topic “Jamaica Labrish: 50 years on…” starting at 6:00 p.m. in honour of the late Hon. Louise Bennett–Coverley, who was one of the most outstanding persons in the development and showcasing of Jamaica’s culture. She pioneered the use of the Jamaican patois in live appearances on stage, radio, television and films as well as in printed literature. The main discussant will be Dr. the Hon. Barbara Gloudon, OJ, OD, Hon LLD., along with Dr. Dennis Howard and Mr. Clyde McKenzie. The Dialogue Series, which forms part of the JCDC 50th Anniversary Celebrations, aims to increase awareness of the contributions of some of Jamaica's leading icons to our rich cultural heritage and national development as well as to look at how their contributions can help us move forward in the next 50 years.

The JCDC, an agency of the Ministry of Youth & Culture continues to play a pivotal role in the development, promotion and preservation of Jamaica’s rich culture and heritage. This is done by enhancing national development through cultural practices by creating opportunities that unearth, develop, preserve, and promote creative talents and expressions of the Jamaican people.
