A full day of activities to celebrate 120th Birthday Anniversary of Rt. Excellent Norman Manley

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will lead in the celebration of the120th Anniversary of the birth of National Hero Right Excellent, Norman W. Manley on Thursday July 4, 2013. JCDC will organize a Floral Tribute in Kingston and along with Manchester Cultural Development Committee stage a Commemoration and Opening of a Permanent Exhibition Area. Additionally, a Cultural Dialogue Series in partnership with the Manchester Chamber of Commerce will be held in the hero’s honour.

Floral Tribute

The Floral tribute will be held at the National Heroes Park, starting at 8 a.m. A number of national and political leaders are expected to be in attendance. These include: their Excellencies, Sir Patrick Allen, Governor General and Lady Allen who will lead the list of government officials and dignitaries; The Honourable Peter Phillips representing Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller and Mr. Andrew Holness, Leader of the Opposition. His Excellency Yuri Gala Lopez, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps is among the tribute layers in Kingston. Also expected to be in attendance is the Honourable Lisa Hanna, Minister of Youth and Culture.

Opening of Exhibition Area

At 12 noon, in Roxborough, Manchester, there will be a Commemoration and Opening of a Permanent Exhibition Area at his birthplace with the Keynote Address delivered by Former Prime Minister, P. J. Patterson.  Other state officials and members of parliament in Manchester will also participate in the Commemoration and Opening of the Exhibition.  

Cultural Dialogue Series

To close the day’s celebration, the first in a series of Cultural Dialogues will be held at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville. The Dialogue will explore the topic “The Drumblair and the growth of the National Movement” with Author, Historian and Former Minister of Government, Mr. Arnold Bertram as the main discussant.

As the nation reflects on the birth of its national hero, it is befitting that these events occur to heighten the awareness of his contributions to nation building.
