Children's Jonkunnu Competition
An examination of Jonkunnu evolution has led to the discovery of several characters, some of which are no longer in existence today. Jonkunnu characters vary from one part of the island to another. The origin of many of these post emancipation figures emerged from the local environment that included African, Caribbean and European influences. These characters are as dynamic and diverse as the Jamaican people of our cultural heritage.
We continue in earnest with our effort to preserve the named Jonkunnu Characters to keep alive the rich cultural tradition which stands to bring awareness and pride, particular for the younger generation. Subsequently, the Children's Jonkunnu Costume Competition is staged annually.
