World Reggae Dance Championship
The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s World Reggae Dance Championship was held for the first time in August 2006, in an effort to give national and international exposure to talent that exists in Reggae/Roots Dance. The Competition was well received, evident by the large audience that attended the finals and specifically members from the reggae dance fraternity in Jamaica. It attracted dancers of the highest calibre, many of whom were nationally recognized through other competitions.
The World Reggae Dance Championship is open to all groups of 3-6 persons, 18 years of age and over, residing in and outside of Jamaica. Participants compete in the categories of Roots Reggae, Dancehall and Dance Narrative. Participants are compelled to adhere to dancehall/reggae movements only.
The Competition takes the form of eliminations, followed by the grand finals where groups compete in full ‘costume’ and perform a distinct choreographed work for a panel of judges drawn from the Jamaican Dance Fraternity.
